Know thyself, know thy own style
To create a unique style of your own may be a challenge for some, while others may find their own naturally. Try to get to know yourself a little better and then build a style that you think defines who you are. It isn’t possible to fulfill a journey without knowing the path to your destination. Likewise, if you don’t have a clue about your own tastes, then how can you create your own style? It wouldn’t be fair to imitate a celebrity that you idolize because that celebrity may have a style and a stylist of it’s own; whereas you have to be your own judge of yourself and the clothes that you put on. Also his/her body type may be different than yours. Here are a few things you should know about yourself before you recognize your own style:
Understand your body: Figure out your body type in order to understand which dress or clothes might suit you well. If you carry weight around the middle part of your body and have a slim lower body, try to minimize your mid-section by highlighting your legs and shoulders. And if you have a thick stomach then wear pants that sit low on the hips as they will help avoid any stomach bulge. Also prefer buying straight-leg jeans. On the other hand, if you have a thin waist and small hips, you may wear tapered pants or skirts.
Understand your personality: We should dress to look like ourselves. But as easy as it sounds, many of us find it surprisingly difficult to find and wear clothes that we truly feel represent our personality. Find a textile or color or shape… something you love, and build your wardrobe around it. Dress boldly if you have a confident personality but don’t let the outfit outshine you. Try floral prints and paisley cravat designs if you have a creative bend of mind.
Find an inspiration: A celebrity fashion muse is someone you look to for fashion inspiration. You can check out what this celebrity wears, take notes on how they wear different items, what colors look good on them, etc. It’s a way to keep your style current, while you learn about fashion. Find someone who looks like you,has a similar sense of personal style and body type. It’s no fun to copy someone’s outfit piece for piece: it’s like fashion plagiarism! Add your own individual twist to their style.
Pick your colors: Pick colors that match your undertone. While there are many different skin tones, there are only two undertones: warm and cool. Keep in mind what you want to convey with your colors. Dark, monochromatic colors can make you look stern or powerful. Wear muted or pale colors if you want to be noticed less. Different occasions and mood demand different colors as well.
Pin the styles that catch your attention: Clothing & accessories you’re looking for in your next fix, trends that interest you and prints or patterns which inspire you the most can be bookmarked and pinned to your style board.
Choose the basic styles for your wardrobe: Make sure your wardrobe contains all the necessary basics for your style. You can wear whatever you want, whenever you want, however you want. But try and prefer to keep the classics in your wardrobe to sort out the dilemma of not knowing what to wear in case of a surprise rendezvous or an urgent meeting.
Carry yourself well with added accessories: True style defies fashion trends. Although it is nice to add some trendy pieces each season, you should only go for the trends that suit you. Keep in mind that the right fit matters and last but not the least- trust your instincts but at the same time be open to suggestions and criticism. Accessories will give you your signature look and your own style.
