One such brand reviving traditional Indian crafts creating the mood of the moment is designer brand Aavaran. Aavaran designer collection takes Mewar’s dabu mud-resist, hand-dyed and hand block prints and makes them contemporary with its signature range of clothing, home furnishings and accessories. The Udaipur-based brand has now taken its own 1,000sqft store in Bengaluru’s heritage art deco building, Ambara, overlooking the picturesque Ulsoor Lake. Aavaran is a journey that started to uphold rural indigenous communities and preserve their traditional craft, Aavaran, based out of Udaipur, Rajasthan known for its contemporized Mud resist hand block prints. Aavaran’s attempt is to evolve the traditional ‘Dabu’ mud resist technique of printing, specifically the indigo dyed ‘phentiya’ print. A range of traditional yet contemporary printed garments made out of fabrics, rich printed sarees, stoles and duppatas are the identity of Aavaran. Aavaran aims to promote and evolve traditional crafts while economically empowering low income crafts people.
“The Bengaluru store will house silk and cotton saris, kurtas, dupattas, menswear and kidswear. Patrons can also shop for Aavaran’s popular bed linen, tableware, cushion covers, quilts and kitchen accessories. The brand’s zero waste policy has led to the creation of a special range of décor accents like durries, coin bags, quilts, poltis, jewellery, juttis and gift items.” said the designer.
